Orion
Bus Industries 06.501 CNG (9200-9249)
Since receiving and evaluating the prototype the Orion VI delivered to the TTC in the mid 90s #2000, the TTC decided to order 50 of these buses which are powered by natural gas. In 1997-1998 the TTC took delivery of the 50 natural gas buses. This model did not look the same as the other Orion bus models because it was a low-floor. Differences from the other models were the big destination sign, a significant number of seats reduced, rear exit at the very rear of the bus and the engine mounted on the left side of the bus. Their first problem to pop up was a steering arm failure and then fuel leaks put these buses put of service for months for safety reasons. The buses did not return to service until the overhead fuel tanks were replaced with new fuel tanks. The problem with the tanks were that the manufacturer that produced the tanks that leaked went out of business and so the TTC was forced to look to another source for Compress Natural Gas tanks. Another concern of the TTC was that the rear axles of these buses could not handle a heavy load so that was replaced along with the wheel rims. Now that they have had their tanks replaced these buses are back on the road also running problem free with the odd empty tank of Natural Gas these buses are only towed to the garage for now a days. |
